USDA Readies Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Purchases for Elementary Schools
Aug. 6, 2008 -- Secretary Ed Schafer today announced that $49 million will be provided in fresh fruits and vegetables for elementary school children during the school day. The 2008 farm bill expands the fresh fruits and vegetable program to selected schools in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
 
USDA Awards $500,000 For WIC Special Project Grants to Four States
Aug. 4, 2008 -- Secretary Ed Schafer today awarded $500,000 in Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Special Project Grants to Maine, Oregon, Vermont and Washington. These grants are designed to help state WIC agencies develop, implement and evaluate new or innovative methods of service delivery.

July 9, 2008 -- Deputy Under Secretary Kate Houston today testified before the House Education and Labor Committee on rising food costs on the Federal Child Nutrition Programs.

May 20, 2008 -- USDA will hold seven listening sessions to prepare for the 2009 Reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Programs, the WIC Program and WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. Sessions are scheduled for the following cities:

Report to Congress: The Nebraska Rural Area Eligibility Determination Pilot for the CACFP

July 31. 2008 -- The Child Nutrition and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Reauthorization Act of 2004 authorized a demonstration pilot of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in rural areas in Nebraska. The Nebraska Rural Area Eligibility Determination for Day Care Homes Pilot (NeRAED Pilot) made it easier for family day care home providers in rural Nebraska to qualify for higher rates of reimbursements for meals and snacks provided under the program.
 

Trends in Food Stamp Program Participation Rates

June 13, 2008 -- The Food Stamp Program helps low-income individuals purchase food so that they can obtain a nutritious diet. One important measure of Program performance is the ability to reach its target population, as indicated by the fraction of people eligible for benefits who actually participate. The findings represent national participation rates for FY 2006.
